History of the Camp

Earl Martin, Camp Founder

Camp Sundog, originally known as The Martin Camp was purchased by the Martin family from Harry Hull on August 19, 1954.  Earl Martin and his wife Mae Martin built the cabin and boathouse to create a quiet place for their family and friends to enjoy Rainbow Lake.  Unlike most camps on the lake, the cabin is situated close to the water’s edge, which is no longer permitted by the Adirondack Park Agency.  In addition to swimming, visitors to The Martin Camp enjoyed dinners of fish caught right from the boathouse dock.  In 1984, Earl passed away and his son, Leander Martin and his wife Agnes inherited the camp.  After the passing of Agnes in 2010, the camp was made available for new owners.

In 2012, renovation of the camp began.  Thanks to the craftsmanship of Earl Martin the structures have remained sound over decades of Adirondack winters.  In renovating the camp, we hoped to integrate both the work of Earl, as well as features we have enjoyed at other camps, such as a heated screened in porch, and create the ideal Adirondack retreat.  Renovation was completed in June of 2012.
